Juan Bruce-Novoa, a great Mexican

J. Bruce Novoa, Oscar Hijuelos, René Avilés Fabila and his wife Rosario Town
article appeared in the newspaper La Crónica, 18 June 2010.
I say the news of his death appeared in some ways, I found out through the writer Bernardo Ruiz, who was called Norma Klahn American literary criticism. My dear friend Juan Bruce-Novoa died on Friday 11 in California. American friends had been warned by his only offspring. As their names, my friend John (when I met him he used the name John) was the son of a wonderful woman of Mexican origin and a distinguished American. Both had died some years ago. I met Johnny in 1967, came to Mexico to investigate to complete their higher education specializing in Mexican literature. He was among the first to study the influence of the essayist and poet Octavio Paz in Carlos Fuentes. I just published my novel games and was surrounded by a big scandal: everybody wanted to know who were the leading intellectuals that appeared in the book, criminally satirized. In Mexico, Johnny was greeted by a Latin American writer, whose name I unfortunately forgot, and told me. We contacted, we were almost the same age and we were both newlyweds. Him with Mary Ann and I with Rosario.

immediately began a friendship that never stop. Every time possible, he invited me to college where he worked. Thus, lectured at Yale, Columbia, University New York and later at the various campuses of the University of California. At each meeting the friendship took hold. Over time was identified as Chicano and changed the John by John. It was a literary critic of great intensity, a great novelist and a sensitive man, capable of finding the secrets of a picture of modern art. When in 1970 my wife and I went to graduate study in France, my dear friend sent me a letter telling me what was familiar to countries that we got to Europe friendships completely unprotected. I keep a good number of his letters, mostly handwritten. In this long and impeccable friendship was a trip to Germany to discuss the state of letters Mexico after the slaughter of Tlatelolco. It was a large group, were some of the best storytellers and Mexican critics. The exhibition of John Bruce-Novoa was brilliant, sharp, full of contributions, enviable. I should add a long meeting in Minnesota, where we met, among others, the very successful Oscar Hijuelos, Pulitzer Prize winner, were days of intense talks between the narrator's literary Cuban, Juan and myself. One night I told my friendship with Alejo Carpentier. Hijuelos was very interested and wanted to know more of the great Cuban literature. John and I gave our views in a long night that lasted until dawn, when he could speak for fatigue and wine.

John established himself as theoretical exponent of Chicano letters and how to be this kind of writer that is expressed in Spanglish and lives caught between two cultures. In this regard, he made a good joke: "Carlos Fuentes is the first Chicano history." I admired friend spoke English flawlessly and Castilian, French and Italian. He had a special fondness for literature and the person of Juan García Ponce and I insisted that I read in another author of that generation, Juan Vicente Melo. It was also a friend of José Luis Cuevas, Sebastian, Rubén Bonifaz Nuño Marco Antonio Campos, Carlos Montemayor, Bernardo Ruiz and a high number of examples of national culture. His treatment was cordial and distinguished. Combined the best of both cultures. His wife, Mary Ann is beautiful, full of talent and sensitivity. In his only son, just saw him as a child, my memories are vague, but we were at home with their parents, I hope not mistaken, Margarita Vargas, Norma Klahn and me.

two years ago, Juan Bruce-Novoa came to Mexico to teach a course at UNAM. Of the few remaining large Mexican. John died Brushwood, who merited to receive the Aztec Eagle and bureaucracy never accepted the proposal despite requests from many renowned writers and intellectuals who knew of the books on national letters he wrote. With a sense of humor, Brushwood said it was the only one in the world who had read the entire Mexican literature. But in exchange for living people like Luis Leal, author of one of the best anthologies on the Mexican tale and who did obtain the said diplomatic recognition, Theda Herz, who worked intensively on the so-called wave generation, Seymour Menton, particular account and many more American professors who loved Latin America and especially Mexico.

John formed a large number of students and all enriched. In both the U.S. and Mexico. Was always positive and generous, essentially a great teacher, an educator par excellence. Thanks to him I met new generations of teachers interested in Mexican letters. His death affected me greatly. It gives me so much to me as a huge pain Rosario and leaves a gap impossible to fill.

The last time we took a drink together, was at the home of sculptor Sebastian, before we had talked long and made projects. Dear John, do not worry, we will take place at the Writers' Heaven, beyond reach for you continue our perfect friendship.
